Big Rock Fire

Last updated: Wednesday, August 5, 2026, reflecting official information published August 4. We update this post every few days while the fire is active.

If you have a Swan Valley trip on the books this month, you have probably seen "wildfire" and "evacuations" in the same Eastern Idaho headline and wondered whether you need to change your plans.

Here is what we know, where the fire actually is, and what we will do about your reservation. This is an active incident and crews are still working it, so please treat official sources as the final word — links are at the bottom.

Where the Big Rock Fire is

The Big Rock Fire started the evening of Friday, July 31 in the foothills north of Kelly Canyon Road and east of Heise. It is burning in the South Fork Canyon near Heise Hot Springs, Kelly Canyon, and Ririe.

That puts it roughly 20 miles down-canyon and to the northwest of Swan Valley, and a few miles further from Irwin — call it a 30 to 40 minute drive. Direction matters as much as distance here: the South Fork of the Snake flows away from us. Palisades Reservoir, Swan Valley, and Irwin all sit upstream of the fire, on the other side of the canyon from where crews are working.

Current status

As of the most recent official update on Tuesday, August 4:

• Size: 2,204 acres (revised down from an earlier 2,482 after better mapping)

• Containment: 0%

• Crews: 250 personnel, with two helicopters assigned to bucket drops

• Structures lost: none. Homes and buildings along Heise Road were protected.

• Injuries: none reported to firefighters or the public

The 0% containment number looks worse than the situation on the ground, and it is the most misread figure in wildfire reporting, so it is worth explaining. Containment does not measure how much of the fire is out. It measures how much perimeter crews are confident will hold. As of Tuesday there were no visible flames on the mountain, only smoke, charred debris, and hot rock. Officials are withholding a containment number because unburned green vegetation in the side canyons could still ignite.

Jefferson County's public information officer, Kimberly Murphy, described it this way: crews "were able to keep all the campsites, all of the buildings themselves. They really limited the damage in this fire, which is really impressive." She also noted the fire "is not growing today," while cautioning that green pockets in the canyons could still spark.

Additional crews were called in Tuesday to reinforce lines north of Kelly Canyon and work hotspots. This is not over, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

What is closed

These are real and you should plan around them:

• Heise, Kelly Canyon, Wolf Flats, and Table Rock areas

• East Heise Road, Lyons Creek Road, and Forest Service roads east of Kelly Canyon

• South Snake River Road — residents and property owners only

• BLM lands, roads, campgrounds, and trails in South Fork Canyon

• All river camping between the Conant and Byington boat accesses — through August 10 — including Kelly Island, Warm Springs, and dispersed River Road sites

• Cress Creek and Stinking Springs trails

• Endowment lands in the Kelly Canyon block south of Moody Creek

• Portions of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest near the fire

Evacuation orders have been limited to the Heise–Kelly Canyon corridor: a Level 3 (Go) area between Heise and Kelly Canyon Resort north of the river, and a Level 2 (Set) standby area along South Snake River Road up to 10000 South. Neither extends to Swan Valley, Irwin, or Palisades.

Worth knowing: the Conant access is the upper end of the river-camping closure and sits a handful of miles below Swan Valley. If a South Fork float was your plan, call an outfitter before you drive.

What is open

As of this update, no evacuation order, closure, or restriction covers Swan Valley or Irwin, and everything a typical trip here is built around is operating:

• Palisades Reservoir — boating, paddleboarding, fishing, swimming

• Upper South Fork access above the closure

• Trails around Palisades, including Palisades Creek and Fall Creek Falls

• The drive to Jackson and Grand Teton over Teton Pass

• US-26 through Swan Valley — no closure has been reported on it, though we would still check Idaho 511 the morning you drive

• All of our units — every glamping tent, tiny home, and cabin is operating on a normal schedule

The thing most likely to affect your trip is smoke and air quality, which moves with the wind and can haze the valley on any given afternoon. It comes and goes. If anyone in your group has asthma or another respiratory condition, check AQI the morning of your drive rather than assuming the best or the worst.

Check these, not us

We would rather you trust primary sources than a lodging company. Four worth having open:

• Watch Duty (free app) — fastest real-time perimeter and evacuation updates

• Bonneville County Sheriff and Jefferson County — current evacuation levels and boundaries

• Idaho 511 — live road conditions

• AirNow.gov — current air quality by zip code

If any of these say something that contradicts this post, they are right and we will correct it.

How we're handling reservations

We are not interested in holding money for a trip you can't comfortably take. While the Big Rock Fire is active:

1. Call or text us at (208) 538-1500 with your dates. We'll tell you what conditions actually look like on the ground that week. Not a form — a person who lives in this valley.

2. If an official evacuation order or road closure affects Swan Valley or Irwin, we will move your dates or refund you. No argument, no fee.

3. If conditions are fine and you'd still rather reschedule, talk to us. We would rather have you back next summer than have you spend this one refreshing a fire map.

If you're still coming, August looks good

Some travelers are changing Eastern Idaho plans this month, and we understand why. The practical effect is that we have August and September availability we normally wouldn't, including units that usually book out well ahead — the glamping tents especially. Dream Catcher, Arabian Nights, and Poppy all have open nights right now.

What that week actually looks like from here: the reservoir glassy at seven in the morning, a paddleboard, coffee on the deck of a tiny home, and kids asleep before the stars are fully out. Some afternoons there is haze on the ridgeline. Most days there isn't.
